Spread along a rocky ridge above the city, this fortress has watched the only pass to the coast for two thousand years: held by Illyrians, Romans, medieval Croatian kings and a legendary band who held off the Ottomans for decades. The views over Split and the islands are immense, and Game of Thrones fans will recognise its ramparts as the city of Meereen.
Drive or bus up for sunset: the panorama over Split, the sea and the islands from the top is unmatched.
