Veliki Kabal is the highest point of the Mosor massif rising right behind Split. Marked trails climb over bare karst until the view opens across the coast, the islands and the Dalmatian hinterland. Up top the wind often whistles over the rocks, and the city below suddenly feels very far away. This is a proper mountain hike: sturdy shoes, water and a check of the forecast are part of it.
Start early in the morning and carry plenty of water, there is almost no shade on the bare karst ridge.
