Why it is worth your time

The temple preserves a richly carved ceiling and a statue of John the Baptist, guarded at the entrance by a black Egyptian granite sphinx. As an audio stop, it works best if you slow down here: look for the stonework, the surrounding streets and the way locals move around the landmark. It gives the route a clear story beat between the postcard sights and the smaller discoveries nearby.

Croatia Atlas tip

Duck in to see the 3,500-year-old black granite sphinx Diocletian brought from Egypt.
