Why it is worth your time

Just inside the Pile Gate, this great sixteen-sided domed fountain has gushed fresh water since 1438, the showpiece end of an aqueduct that brought spring water twelve kilometres into the city. The carved mascarons that once spouted were worn smooth by centuries of hands; pilgrims and plague-wary travellers washed here before entering the town.

Croatia Atlas tip

The water is drinkable and cold, refill your bottle from one of the worn stone mascarons.
