Zadar's peninsula still sits inside its Venetian armour: massive walls and bastions that once made the city a fortress. Since 2017 they have been part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Venetian defence works. Grandest of all is the Land Gate by the Foša harbour, its arch watched over by the winged lion of St Mark. Along the harbour side you can walk a stretch right beside the ramparts.
The Land Gate at the Foša is the finest way into the old town; in evening light the stone glows especially warm.
A small next-step selection from the same city.
