Why it is worth your time

Inside the walls of the 17th-century Gripe fortress this museum tells how deeply Dalmatia lives off the sea: ship models from sailing boats to steamers, navigation instruments, uniforms and mementoes of naval battles. Between the exhibits you feel the spirit of a city whose story has always run across the water. Quiet, quirky and pleasantly untouristy.

Croatia Atlas tip

Don't miss the torpedo collection: the torpedo was co-invented in the Croatian city of Rijeka.
