Why it is worth your time

The most monumental of the palace's four gates, the Porta Aurea opened the imperial road north toward Salona. Through it Diocletian first entered his retirement palace in AD 305. Just outside towers Meštrović's giant Gregory of Nin, his shiny toe rubbed gold by wish-makers; within, the niches that once held statues of emperors still line the arch.

Croatia Atlas tip

Rub the big toe of the Gregory of Nin statue just outside: local lore says it grants a wish.
