Housed in the handsome late-Gothic Papalić Palace, one of the finest mansions inside the walls, this museum traces Split's story from the Roman palace through the medieval commune to the Venetian centuries. Weapons, documents, carved stonework and old views fill rooms built by the city's patrician families: a quiet way to read the layers stacked all around you.
The palace courtyard and carved Gothic portal are worth a look even before you buy a ticket.
