Why it is worth your time

Founded in 1820, this is Croatia's oldest museum, and its heart is Roman: most of the sculptures, mosaics, jewellery and coins come from Salona, once the mighty capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia just outside Split. In the arcaded courtyard, stone sarcophagi and inscriptions line up like a history book you stroll through.

Croatia Atlas tip

Save time for the courtyard: the lapidarium with its sarcophagi is the most atmospheric part.
