Why it is worth your time

Wedged between later buildings, this plain stone arch from the mid-1st century BC is the oldest Roman monument in Pula. Carved at its crown are the bearded head of Hercules and his club, and, crucially, the names of the two Roman officials who founded the colony, making this the city's birth certificate in stone.

Croatia Atlas tip

Find the worn club and bearded face at the very top of the arch: that carving names Pula's Roman founders.
