Why it is worth your time

On the rise near Štinjan, this sprawling fort from the Austro-Hungarian era watches over the entrance to Pula's harbour. You wander through a labyrinth of corridors, casemates and courtyards, with views of the sea opening up between the walls. In summer, music festivals turn the old stonework into one of the Adriatic's most unusual dance floors.

Croatia Atlas tip

Come towards evening: from the ramparts you look out towards the Brijuni islands, and the low sun turns the stone golden.
