Why it is worth your time
Behind a Renaissance facade stands one of Croatia's oldest churches: a basilica begun in the 5th century on the foundations of a Roman temple. Floor mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries survive inside, and its free-standing bell tower was raised in the 1600s from stone quarried out of the Arena. Fire, earthquake and plunder all failed to erase it.
