Why it is worth your time
The Plitvice Lakes are a remarkable karst phenomenon: a chain of sixteen lakes linked by waterfalls that spill over travertine barriers. Declared a national park in 1949 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, it is a wooded mountain region laced with wooden walkways and clear, turquoise water.
