Sveti Nikola is the highest peak of Hvar island, reached by marked trails through maquis and bare karst. A small chapel stands at the top, and the view runs across the island, its neighbours and the open sea. The climb is a proper outing rather than a stroll: sturdy shoes, water and a look at the weather come first.
Start early or late in the afternoon; the open slopes offer almost no midday shade, and skip it in bora wind or thunderstorms.
