Why it is worth your time

At the end of the Stradun stands the only major building to come through the catastrophic 1667 earthquake almost untouched. Once the customs house, mint and bank of the Ragusan Republic, its graceful arcaded courtyard now guards the state archives, a thousand years of documents, and a quietly devastating memorial room to the city's defenders of 1991.

Croatia Atlas tip

Step into the courtyard (it's free) and find the 1991 Memorial Room of the young defenders who died here.
