Why it is worth your time
A short drive inland, Risnjak trades the Adriatic for the deep beech and fir forests of Gorski kotar. Trails climb through karst hollows to the rocky summit of Veliki Risnjak, where the view runs back down to the Kvarner Bay, and the woods still shelter bears, wolves and the lynx that gave the park its name. This is proper mountain country, so give it a full day and solid shoes.
