Dug into the rock as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War, this tunnel now runs quietly beneath Rijeka's old town. You descend right in the city center, follow the dimly lit passage through raw rock and surface again a few streets away. Above you the traffic rumbles on; down here you mostly hear your own footsteps.
On hot summer days the tunnel stays wonderfully cool; bring a light layer.
