Flights to Split

Split airport is the main gateway to central Dalmatia. It does not sit in Split itself but in Kaštela, about 20 kilometres north-west of the city, next to the coastal road towards Trogir.

Getting from the airport into Split

A shuttle bus runs between the terminal and the main bus station in Split, next to the ferry port, and takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on summer traffic. The public city line towards Split is slower and cheaper, and stops on the main road a short walk from the terminal. Trogir is closer than Split: it is a few kilometres in the other direction. There is also a railway stop at Kaštel Stari within walking distance, useful in the low season when buses thin out.

What you can reach from SPU

Split itself, Trogir almost immediately, then Omiš and Makarska down the coast. The ferry port in Split is the departure point for Brač, Hvar, Vis and Korčula, which makes SPU the practical arrival airport for most of the Dalmatian islands.

When the routes run

Split is a strongly seasonal airport. From April to October the route map is dense across Europe, with a peak in July and August. In winter the number of destinations drops sharply and connections often run through Zagreb, so a winter trip to Dalmatia frequently works out better through Zagreb airport.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Split airport from the city centre?
About 20 kilometres. The airport lies in Kaštela between Split and Trogir, so the transfer takes 30 to 40 minutes by shuttle bus, longer in summer when the coastal road is busy.
Should I fly to Split or Dubrovnik for the islands?
Split, in almost every case. The ferry port next to the bus station is the hub for Brač, Hvar, Vis and Korčula, with far more daily sailings than Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik makes sense for the far south, for Cavtat and for the Elaphiti islands.
